Bareos is an open-source, enterprise-grade platform for backup, archiving, and recovery, developed by Bareos GmbH & Co. KG. Built on a modular architecture—Director, Storage Daemon, and File Daemon—Bareos delivers centralized, cross-platform data protection for physical, virtual, and cloud environments. It supports full, differential, incremental, and synthetic (virtual) full backups; flexible scheduling and retention policies; and a robust SQL catalog for tracking and restoring data. Bareos works with a wide range of storage targets, including disk and tape libraries, and can be extended via plugins for additional backends. Security features include encrypted data transport, optional data-at-rest encryption, and role-based access. Administration is available through a web-based interface and command-line tools, with detailed reporting and alerting to help meet operational and compliance needs.
